Abstract: Nella campagna lettone vive un uomo anziano e solitario. Ogni giorno, con il bel tempo o con la pioggia, egli percorre in bicicletta i sette chilometri che separano la sua casa dal centro del villaggio per sedersi alla fermata dell’autobus. Quando arriva la sera, risale in bicicletta e torna a casa. In un racconto minimale, Pakalnina descrive l'immagine di un paese e di un'epoca: tra malinconia e humor. “Per Teodors la fermata non era solo il centro del villaggio, ma il centro dello stato, del mondo, dell'universo. Ci vedeva poco e il suo udito era così debole che la gente per parlargli doveva urlare. Ciononostante, vedeva e sentiva tutto attorno a sé. Forse le ore spese alla fermata erano i momenti più appaganti della sua vita. Teodors è morto nel sonno soffocato dal fumo dell'incendio che ha distrutto la sua casa, ma gli oggetti bruciati che abbiamo trovato continuavano a raccontare la sua storia” (L. Pakalnina).
In the Latvian countryside lives an old and reclusive man. Every day, rain or shine, he rides a bicycle the seven kilometers between his home and the village center, where he sits at the bus stop. Come evening, he hops back on his bike and rides home. In a minimalist story, Pakalnina depicts a country and an epoch between melancholia and humor. “For Teodors the stop wasn't just the village center, but the center of the state, the world, the universe. He couldn't see very well and was so hard of hearing people had to shout for him to hear. That notwithstanding, he saw and heard everything around him. Perhaps those hours at the stop were the most satisfying moments of his life. Teodors died in his sleep, suffocated from the smoke when his house burned down, but some of the objects retrieved from the fire continue to tell his story” (L. Pakalnina).
