Abstract: L'operatore di ascensori Albertas se ne sta tutto il giorno ad aspettare che qualcuno chiami l'ascensore, un segnale che qualcuno ha bisogno di lui. “Era molto importante per me che questa attesa fosse espressa in termini visivi - qualcosa di simile alla realtà fisica di “Aspettando Godot” di Beckett. Percepiamo spesso un'attesa interiore - nelle nostre menti e nelle nostre preghiere - è un'attesa intellettuale. Ma l'attesa di Albertas è qualcosa di diverso - è molto fisica - la natura del suo lavoro è aspettare… mentre qualcuno chiama l'ascensore e poi premere il bottone giusto, cosa totalmente irragionevole, dato che ognuno può farlo benissimo da solo, senza l'aiuto di Albertas. Mi ha commosso vedere quanto Albertas sia felice durante le sue attese, mentre ognuno di noi di solito aspetta solo che succeda qualcosa di meglio e dimentica la quarta dimensione - ovvero il tempo non solo come fenomeno fisico, ma anche metafisico. In questo film volevo che lo spettatore percepisse questa quarta dimensione e l'attesa in senso fisico. E il film dovrebbe diventare non solo un mezzo per raggiungere questa sensazione, ma anche un fine utile a rinnovarla” (A. Matelis).
Albertas, a lift-operator, sits all day waiting for someone to ring the elevator, a sign that someone needs him. “It was really important to me that this waiting was shown visually - something similar to Beckett's “Waiting for Godot”. We often perceive waiting inside us - in our minds and prayers. That's an intellectual waiting. But Albertas' waiting is something different, it's very physical. The nature of his work is waiting… for someone to ring the elevator and hit the right button. It's totally irrational seeing as anyone can do it alone, without Albertas' help. It moved me to see how happy Albertas was while waiting; most of us usually wait for something good to happen and forget the fourth dimension - rather, time is not only a physical phenomenon but a metaphysical one, too. In this film I wanted the audience to perceive this fourth dimension and the physical sense of waiting. The film should not only be a means to reach that dimension but also a useful end to renew it” (A. Matelis).
