Abstract: Tra i molti personaggi raccontati da Šablevičius c'č Eugenija Simkunaite, dottore di biologia, che visitň molti villaggi con lo scopo di studiare i segreti della medicina tradizionale. Č per questo motivo che, prima di tutto, Šablevičius ce la presenta come una di quelle streghe abili in antiche magie e incantesimi. Il regista č incuriosito dal modo in cui in una persona possa coesistere il pensiero scientifico e l'attitudine alla vita della natura. Il personaggio č descritto attraverso due livelli che si contrappongono: uno ironico, nella rappresentazione di una donna intelligente, ostinata, schietta, un po' rude, che non si cura molto del suo aspetto, ma che mantiene un brillante senso dell'umorismo; un secondo livello poetico capace di svelare la bellezza delle vere tradizioni nazionali, di mostrare la necessitŕ della loro continuitŕ.
Inglese: Among the characters portrayed by Šablevičius, there is Eugenija Simkunaite, a graduate in biology who, in the '50s and '60s, wandered lots of villages in order to penetrate into the secrets of traditional medicine. That is why first of all Šablevičius introduces her as some ancient witch well-versed in ancient magic and spellcasting. Intrigued by the way in which scientific thought and the attitudes of the natural world can co-exist in a person, the director presents the woman on two levels: one is ironic - the depiction of an intelligent, persistent, straightforward, a bit rough woman, not much caring about her looks, but maintaining a brilliant sense of humor; another is poetic - able to disclose the beauty of the true national traditions, to show the necessity for their continuity.
