Abstract: Un gruppo di cineasti-operatori gira per il quartiere operaio di Saint-Henry, a Montreal, per ventiquattr’ore, filmando dentro e fuori le case, gli uffici, i luoghi pubblici, soffermandosi su una famiglia di operai e seguendone i percorsi, i gesti, i rituali: dalla preparazione della colazione, ai preparativi di chi va al lavoro o a scuola. Il montaggio salta da una situazione all’altra, ordinaria o straordinaria, individuale o collettiva, mentre la voce fuori campo commenta non solo e non tanto le immagini, i luoghi e i volti che scorrono sullo schermo, quanto il modo di filmarle, nella consapevolezza di star sperimentando, collettivamente, un nuovo modo di fare cinema e di raccontare il mondo. Uno dei lavori più teorici del Cinema diretto, il film è, di fatto, un’opera collettiva, alla quale partecipano tutti i protagonisti del cinema canadese, come Claude Jutra, Michel Brault, Gilles Groulx, Claude Fournier, Jacques Godbout, Bernard Gosselin e Georges Dufaux. “Il film si chiude con un riferimento a quei cineasti che cercano la luce e il suono nelle strade. Il film è al tempo stesso un omaggio a Rouch e a Hitchcock; ma qui il mistero è totalmente interno, non esterno” (G. Evans).
A crew of filmmakers go around the working class neighborhood of Saint-Henry in Montreal for twenty four hours, filming the ins and outs of houses, offices, public places, and stopping at a working class family to follow their rhythms, gestures, rituals: preparing breakfast, getting ready for work or school. The film jumps from one situation to the next, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, from the individual to the collective, while the voices off-screen comment not only on the images, places and faces flitting across the screen, but also on the way they are filming them, aware that they are experimenting, collectively, to find a new way to make films and present the world. One of the most theoretical works of Direct Cinema, the film is a collective work, in which every major Canadian filmmaker participated, including Claude Jutra, Michel Brault, Gilles Groulx, Claude Fournier, Jacques Godbout, Bernard Gosselin and Georges Dufaux. “The film ends with a reference to those filmmakers who look to capture the light and sound of the streets. At the same time, it’s an homage to Rouch and Hitchcock; but here the mystery is completely internal, not external”(G. Evans).
