Abstract: Silenzio. Una voce inizia a raccontare la storia di una vita. L’inquadratura resta fissa sul volto che forse è dell’uomo al quale appartiene la voce. Poi irrompe l’esterno: qualche inquadratura esplora lo spazio aperto che forse è appena fuori il locale in cui si trova l’uomo, il suono del vento, quello di passi, la musica. Ma è solo per pochi secondi. La voce continua a raccontare immersa nel silenzio. Il “re” del titolo è un sarto che ha lavorato e vissuto buona parte della sua vita da militare. In questo breve ritratto Marcel Łoziński riduce al minimo la varietà dei materiali e sperimenta lavorando sugli elementi primi dell’articolazione estetica del film. Il rapporto/legame tra colonna visiva e colonna sonora viene allentato, contraddetto, messo in dubbio; l’immagine didascalica viene spinta ben oltre la sua effettiva utilità di illustrazione e diventa quasi ritmo figurale astratto; la gamma delle inquadrature, la distanza dell’obiettivo dal soggetto ripreso, dell’intervistatore dell'intervistato, ogni scelta pur minuscola viene sottolineata fino a ingigantirne la dimensione, fino a farne sentire amplificato il peso. Lo stesso dispositivo dell’intervista viene contraddetto, parodiato e finanche fatto letteralmente a pezzi. In questo, come in pochi altri suoi film, Łoziński usa l’ironia come principio estetico fondante.
Quiet. After a while, some voice over begins to tell the story of someone’s life. The camera lingers on the face of a man, who may or may not be the one speaking. Suddenly, we are outside: the camera explores the open space that may lie just outside the room where the man is. Noise of wind, steps, music, but this lasts for a few seconds. The voice keeps on, bathed in silence. The title’s “king” is a tailor who has been in the military for most of his life. In this concise portrait, Marcel Łoziński cuts down the variety of materials. He experiments with the primary elements of film language and aesthetics. The relation/link between picture track and sound track is loosened, contradicted, questioned; explanatory pictures are used beyond their actual informative role and take on an almost abstract quality; the range of shots, the distance of the lens from the object of the shoot – of the interviewer from the interviewee – any minimal choice is underscored until their dimension is magnified, their scope exaggerated. The interview device is contradicted too, parodied, if not broken down – literally. Irony used as an embedded aesthetic principle in film is not to be seen often in Marcel Łoziński’s work.
