In the year 2000, the millionaire businessman Rafiq Hariri, after a spell as prime minister, became leader of the opposition in Lebanon. The owner of a property empire that had played a big role in the reconstruction of Beirut, he was the quintessential power broker – for some «the saviour» of the country, for others the man who had dug its grave. Filmmaker Omar Amiralay was warned by his friends, by the «critical intellectuals», that choosing Hariri as his subject would expose him to the risk of being seduced and manipulated. But this is precisely what Amiralay wanted to experience and understand – the nature of the relations of power between ‘filmed subject’ and filmmaker; staging as a relationship of power or seduction, and the undermining, through film, of the illusions of filming and the dead ends of good intentions. Rafiq Hariri was assassinated in Beirut in 2005. Amiralay’s film, rejected for a long time by the Lebanese left wing, has become a focus for reflection and memory. “Through the cinema everything becomes possible: to point out what is missing or concealed, to show the invisible and what happens through manipulation, to amplify whispered rumours and murmurings, to bring about an implosion of slogans and to debunk official discourse” (Omar Amiralay).
