Abstract: La macchina da presa vaga lungo le strade e i luoghi della capitale giapponese durante le olimpiadi di Tokyo (1964) alla ricerca di un volto. È il volto enigmatico e affascinante di una giovane ragazza, Koumiko, oggetto di un ritratto impossibile, di un pedinamento continuo. Seguire la ragazza, cercare di coglierne il mistero, l’enigma che rappresenta, significa accettare l’imperscrutabilità di un’esistenza, la sfida impossibile di un cinema che cerca di comprendere la realtà, di penetrarla, di restituirla attraverso le immagini. Il viaggio però, se non un soggetto, ci restituisce un mondo, ci consegna uno sguardo, quello di Marker, sempre attento ad interrogare l’immagine attraverso i luoghi che visita con la sua macchina da presa, sempre capace di costruire un senso nuovo per mezzo di un rapporto aperto tra l’immagine e il commento. “Film impressionista, tale è, sicuramente, “Le Mystère Koumiko”. Ma attraverso il flusso di immagini, attraverso il flusso incessante della vita, si sente la volontà caparbia di Marker di cogliere al volo alcune verità che sono quelle di Koumiko, ma anche le vostre e le mie, a Tokyo, in Giappone e oltre” (B. The camera moves through the streets and locales of the Japanese capital during the Tokyo Olympics of 1964, looking for a face. It’s the enigmatic and fascinating face of a young girl, Koumiko, the object of an impossible portrait, continuously trailing its object. To follow the girl, to try and capture the mystery and enigma she represents means accepting the inscrutability of an existence, the impossible challenge of filmmaking that tries to understand reality, penetrate it, restore it through images. However, the voyage, if not the subject, gives us back a world, shows us a face, Marker’s own, always careful to interrogate the image through the places he visits with his camera, always capable of constructing a new meaning through an open relationship between images and commentary. “It’s definitely an impressionistic film, Le Mystère Koumiko. But through the flow of images, through the incessant flow of life, you sense Marker’s stubborn will to quickly capture some truths that belong to Koumiko, and to you and me, to Tokyo, to Japan and elsewhere” (B. Cohn).
