Abstract: Marcel e Paweł Łoziński, padre e figlio, due dei più importanti documentaristi polacchi. Il figlio Paweł propone al padre Marcel un viaggio insieme, un viaggio che sia anche, anzi, che sia soprattutto un film. Marcel accetta. Il film, girato a quattro mani, diventa poi una coppia di film simili ma non identici, montati singolarmente dai due autori. Due film che mettono a frutto la grande esperienza umana e cinematografica dei registi per costruire un dispositivo di osservazione a due fuochi. Sotto l’apparente linearità del diario di un viaggio in macchina - con lo scambio di ricordi, i momenti d’ironia, gli screzi e i gesti di complicità e d’affetto - giace un altro testo, ben più complesso e articolato del primo. I due – in modo premeditato e perfettamente lucido - si guardano attraverso la lente del cinema: il loro sguardo però è diretto tanto sull’altro quanto su di sé. Il cinema viene insomma usato ancora una volta come dispositivo di studio e di innesco della realtà, della verità, solo che stavolta soggetto e oggetto dell’osservazione si dividono il posto, finendo per coincidere. Nel film di Marcel il protagonista è lui, padre, ebreo, polacco, figlio di un tempo e di un mondo che il figlio Paweł forse non può comprendere.
Marcel and Paweł Łoziński, father and son, two of the most outstanding Polish documentarists. The son, Paweł, proposes to the father, Marcel, to travel together. A journey that is also, or rather, is mainly a film. Marcel agrees. The co-directed film will become a pair of films, similar but not identical, edited separately by the two filmmakersù. The two films take advantage of the considerable human and cinematic experience of the filmmakers and result in a sort of two-lens device of analysis. Running below the apparent linearity of a car travelogue - including the exchange of memories, the moments of irony, disagreements, and gestures of complicity and love - there is another text, far more complex and sophisticated than the former. The two, in a fairly predetermined and lucid way, look at each other through the lens of Cinema. But their gaze is directed toward both the other and himself. Once again film is used as a device to break down and put reality, and truth, in motion; the difference is that, this time, the subject and object of study share their role and ultimately correspond. In the film by Marcel, the leading character is himself, father, Jew, Polish, child of a time and a world that his son Paweł may not be able to understand.
