Abstract: Ogni struttura è un dispositivo finalizzato a garantire un ordine di qualche tipo. In questo senso la presenza di una struttura può essere inquietante per la sua capacità di determinare o sopprimere la libertà individuale, ma anche fortemente rassicurante, in quanto permette di leggere il mondo circostante e di formulare delle aspettative stabili. Una struttura può essere complessa nel modo in cui tiene insieme i suoi elementi costitutivi ma deve essere estremamente semplice nel suo funzionamento. Così è il sistema di valori e di procedure del protagonista del film, secondino e maestro del carcere in cui lavora. Un film prezioso, realizzato senza alcun tono moralista e valutativo da P. Łoziński agli inizi della sua attività cinematografica. Il protagonista è uomo d’apparato, non tanto perché aderisce in modo convinto ad un’ideologia, ma perché ne incarna i presupposti e le conseguenze. Lo zelo e la convinzione che mette nel suo lavoro, il suo agire meticoloso e ispirato da un fine pedagogico, il fatto di concepirsi come una parte di un tutto coerente e positivo lo trasforma in una rara testimonianza diretta del funzionamento di una struttura pervasiva com’è quella di un regime.
Every structure is a device created to guarantee some order. In this sense, the presence of structure can be troublesome, if you consider that it can influence or cancel individual freedom, but also strongly reassuring to the extent that it allows one to read the surrounding world, and formulate reliable expectations. The way in which a structure holds its components together can be complex, but it should be very simple in its functioning. This is the system of values and procedures of the protagonist, a prison guard and a teacher of a jail, the protagonist of this precious film made without any moralist and judgmental overtones by P. Łoziński in his early career. The protagonist is a man of the apparatus, not much because he is a willing follower of an ideology, but because he embodies its premises and its consequences. The zeal and the conviction he puts into doing his job, his painstaking, pedagogically-inspired way of working, his feeling like part and parcel of a coherent and positive whole make him a rare, direct evidence of how a pervasive structure like that of a regime actually works.
