Abstract: Le barbabietole da zucchero sono ciò che sostiene il villaggio di Stampersgat, nell'Olanda meridionale. La fabbrica di zucchero locale non sta andando molto bene, e di conseguenza l'intera città è un disastro. A causa della nuova legislazione dell'UE, il sussidio europeo per la coltivazione delle barbabietole da zucchero è scomparso. In chiesa, la gente prega per tempi migliori. Patrick Bus filma la città in cui è cresciuto, la sua famiglia in particolare, con un occhio attento ai dettagli. Suo padre è così pazzo per lo zucchero che lo mette su tutto, dalla minestra alle patatine fritte, e Bus cattura tutto questo in inquadrature fisse da sopra il piatto. Da quando l'anziano signor Bus è andato in pensione, il matrimonio dei suoi genitori è in crisi. Mentre fa un bagno di schiuma, sua madre si domanda se potrebbe farcela da sola. Quando il cugino del regista vede che il suo piano di rilevare la fattoria del padre viene ostacolato, passa all'industria delle patate. Questo racconto estremamente personale rivela la noia e le irritazioni interne delle persone che sono finite in un buco nero a causa della perdita dell'industria dello zucchero.
Sugar beets are what bind the southern Dutch village of Stampersgat together. The local sugar factory isn't doing very well, and as a result the whole town is a mess. Because of new EU legislation, the European subsidy for the cultivation of sugar beets has disappeared. In church, people are praying for better times. Director Patrick Bus films the town he grew up in, his own family in particular, with a sharp eye for detail. His father is so crazy about sugar that he puts it on everything, from soup to French fries, and Bus captures this all in stationary shots from right above the plate. Since the elder Bus's early retirement, his parents' marriage has been on the rocks. While taking a bubble bath, his mother wonders whether she could make it on her own. When the filmmaker's cousin sees that his plan to take over his father's farm is being thwarted, he switches to the potato industry. This extremely personal account reveals the boredom and internal irritations of people who have ended up in a black hole because of the loss of the sugar industry.
