Abstract: Hossein e Shaima si amano fin dall'infanzia. Da adolescenti sono stati separati dalla guerra. Si incontrano di nuovo a Kabul alla fine degli anni '90. La povertà costringe Hossein a partecipare alla guerra. Una scheggia di granata lo lascia paralizzato. Poco dopo, Shaima viene venduta in matrimonio a un uomo di 40 anni più vecchio di lei. Shaima, che è la quarta moglie dell'uomo, rimane incinta. Ma il marito di Shaima deve ancora la metà della dote, e così suo padre la riporta nella costrizione patriarcale della famiglia, dove vive oggi con la figlia di cinque anni. Questa situazione non impedisce ai due amanti di vedersi il più possibile, anche se questo significa andare contro le regole ferree delle loro famiglie. Entrambi sognano di vivere insieme in pace. Nella costante paura di vendetta da parte dei membri maschi di entrambe le famiglie, che aderiscono alle dure leggi tribali tramandate dal Medioevo, Hossein e Shaima lottano nelle circostanze più difficili che si possano immaginare per mantenere vivo il loro amore.
Hossein and Shaima have loved each other since childhood. As teenagers they were separated by war. They meet again in Kabul in the late 1990s. Poverty forces Hossein to fight in the war. A shell splinter leaves him paralyzed. Shortly afterwards, Shaima is sold in marriage to a man 40 years her senior. Shaima, who is the man’s fourth wife, falls pregnant. But Shaima’s husband still owes half the dowry, and so her father brings her back into the constraining patriarchal fold of the family, where she lives today with her five-year-old daughter. This situation doesn’t prevent the two lovers from seeing each other as much as possible – even though this means going against their families’ hard and fast rules. They both dream of living together in peace. Living in constant fear of revenge on the part of the male members of both families, who adhere to the harsh tribal laws handed down from the Middle Ages, Hossein and Shaima struggle under the most difficult circumstances imaginable to hold on to their love.
