Abstract: La vicenda è ambientata nel nord della Francia, vicino alle città di Roubaix e Tourcoing, al confine con il Belgio. Una zona famosa per molti decenni per l'industria laniera e quella tessile entrambe nelle mani di poche famiglie ricche. Oggi, i grandi mulini hanno chiuso - causando pesanti perdite di posti di lavoro in tutta la regione. I protagonisti della nostra storia sono le "due facce della stessa medaglia": una famiglia di commercianti di lana - ricca e segreta come la maggior parte delle famose grandi famiglie del Nord - e gli operai (Messaoud, Maurice, Patrick e Bouzid) il cui destino è stato strettamente legato a quello della famiglia di commercianti. I piani d'affari e le strategie elaborate e messe in atto da questa grande famiglia per massimizzare il loro capitale - spesso a scapito dei loro dipendenti che ne dovevano sopportare le conseguenze - costituiscono l'ossatura della narrazione. Un ritratto incrociato di "padroni" e di "servi" che guardano al passato ognuno dal proprio punto di vista, con un misto di nostalgia, amarezza e rassegnazione: una storia di fortune e disgrazie nella società post-industriale.
Our story is set in the France’s North, near the towns of Roubaix and Tourcoing, close to the Belgian border. An area famous over many decades for its wool and textile industry, which had been in the hands of a few rich families. Today, the big mills have closed – causing heavy job losses all over the region. The main characters of this story are the “two sides of the same coin” : a family of wool merchants - as rich and secretive as most of the famous big families of the North – and the workers (Messaoud, Maurice, Patrick and Bouzid) whose fate has been intricately linked to that of the merchant family through the decades. The “plot”: the various business plans and strategies concocted and implemented by this great family in order to maximise their capital – often to the detriment of their employees who could only bear the consequences. A cross-portrait of “masters” and “servants” who look at bygone glory each from their own standpoint, with a mixture of nostalgia, bitterness and resignation: a story of fortunes and misfortunes in our post-industrialised society.
