Abstract: Ogni settimana all'ospedale "Robert Debré" di Parigi (rinomato ospedale pediatrico), il personale medico è alle prese con il destino: sulla base dei risultati di un certo numero di esami medici (ecografia, risonanza magnetica, amniocentesi), dovranno decidere se un handicap fetale rappresenta un "rischio sostanziale" tale da giustificare l'interruzione volontaria della gravidanza. Un articolo della legge francese li mette in condizione di decidere sulla vita e sulla morte. Il termine "particulière gravité" - indicato nella legge francese - si riferisce alle ragioni legali e mediche per un'interruzione tardiva della gravidanza in Francia: casi di "rischio sostanziale" di handicap fetale. Il film segue tre storie, tre "casi", ognuno dei quali presenta una sfida diversa e richiede la più difficile delle decisioni: autorizzare o meno un aborto in base alla patologia rilevata nel feto e anche in base alla capacità dei futuri genitori di affrontare la situazione. Questo processo decisionale è soggetto a dibattiti spesso accesi, ma i medici decidono insieme sull'interpretazione della legge per ogni caso specifico. Il film fa luce su una questione bio-etica che solleva dibattiti in ogni paese, poiché il progresso scientifico permette di individuare precocemente una varietà di handicap fetali. Osserviamo come i medici presentano la situazione medica ai genitori, come presentano chiaramente il tipo di trattamento disponibile - e i suoi limiti - e come accompagnano i genitori nella loro scelta. Perché alla fine, sono i genitori che devono fare la scelta più difficile della loro vita.
Each week at the "Robert Debré" Hospital in Paris (a renowned paediatric hospital), the medical staff has to grapple with fate: based on the results of a number of medical exams (ultra sound, MRI, amniocentesis), they will have to decide whether a foetal handicap represents a “substantial risk” which justifies a volontary termination of pregnancy. An article of French law places them in a position to decide over life and death. The term "Particulière Gravité" refers to the legal and medical reasons for a late termination of pregnancy in France: cases of “substantial risk” of foetal handicap. The film follows three stories, three "cases", each of them presenting a different challenge and requiring the most difficult of all decisions: to authorise or not an abortion according to the pathology detected in the foetus and also based on the capacity of the future parents to cope with the situation. This decision-making process is subject to often heated debates, but the doctors decide together on the interpretation of the law in each specific case. The film sheds light on a bio-ethical issue that raises debates in every country, since scientific progress allows for early detection of a variety of foetal handicaps. We observe how they doctors present the medical situation to the parents, how they present clearly the kind treatment available – and its limits - and how they accompany the parents in their choice. Because in the end, it is the parents who have to make the most difficult choice of their lives.
