Abstract: Molte sono le storie di ticinesi emigrati in California, ognuna di loro ha in sé qualcosa di eccezionale, alcune sono storie di successo, altre sono storie comuni di vite vissute. Quella di Gino Giacinti inizia a Bellinzona negli anni '20. La sua è una gioventù difficile, suo padre muore quando Gino ha solo 8 anni, ed è al suo funerale che Gino vede per l'ultima volta sua madre. Dopodiché scompare. Ancora oggi Gino non sa cosa le sia successo. Gino cresce tra istituti e tutori, dal Ticino si sposta nella Svizzera interna, dove inizia un apprendistato come pasticcere. Terminati gli studi e fatta un po' di esperienza in giro per la Svizzera, Gino decide di imbarcarsi e partire per nuove avventure. Arriva in Perù, a Lima, dove per quattro anni lavora come pasticcere al Country Club, un lussuoso albergo di proprietà del governo. Pur trovandosi bene in Perù, Gino è attratto dalla California, ed è cosi che, nel 1952, parte per Los Angeles. Le sua grandi qualità di pasticcere lo aiutano a trovare subito lavoro all'Ambassador, l'albergo dove, nel 1968, venne ucciso Robert Kennedy. La sua vita è incentrata sul lavoro. Di carattere solitario, fatica a integrarsi nella realtà americana, ma destino vuole che un giorno un suo compagno di lavoro lo inviti ad uscire per andare a ballare. Proprio quella sera conosce Bernice. Si innamorano e, poco dopo, si sposano. Nasce la loro prima ed unica figlia, Linda, ed è in quel periodo che un signore di nome Newman propone a Gino di comprare la sua pasticceria a Redondo Beach. Gino ha come unica risorsa economica il suo stipendio, ma capisce che è un'occasione da non perdere. Con il Signor Newman si accorda per un pagamento rateale e, dopo solo tre anni di esercizio, riesce a ripagare il suo debito. "Da Gino" diventa il posto di ritrovo dove ogni mattina ci si ferma per una tazza di caffè e una ciambella. Per 50 anni il suo pane e la sua pasticceria sono state le più famose dell'intera regione. A quasi 80 anni, Gino decide di andare in pensione e abbandonare l'attività. Gino e Bernice si ritirano nella loro casa di Redondo Beach, finché un giorno di qualche mese fa lei non si sente bene, decide di andare dal dottore, e dopo le dovute analisi, si scopre che Bernice ha un tumore. Bernice viene ricoverata in ospedale, e Linda, con sua figlia Amber, si trasferisce a casa del padre per prendersene cura. Gino fatica ad accettare la nuova realtà, tutto sta cambiando davanti ai suoi occhi e lui, impotente, non può fare altro che accettare il destino delle cose. "Il cheeseburger di Gino" racconta i giorni di quest'uomo durante la fase drammatica del cambiamento, ripercorre il suo vissuto, ma soprattutto pone lo sguardo sulla realtà di un vecchio che, senza poterci fare niente, vede tutto ciò che più gli è caro scivolare via.
There are many stories of Ticinese who emigrated to California, each of them has something exceptional about it, some are success stories, others are common stories of lives lived. Gino Giacinti's began in Bellinzona in the 1920's. His youth was difficult, his father died when Gino was only 8 years old, and it was at his funeral that Gino saw his mother for the last time. Gino grows up among institutes and tutors, from Ticino he moves to the Swiss interior, where he begins an apprenticeship as a pastry chef. After finishing his studies and gaining some experience around Switzerland, Gino decides to embark and leave for new adventures. He arrived in Lima (Peru), where, for four years, he worked as a pastry chef at the Country Club, a luxury hotel owned by the government. Although he enjoyed his time in Peru, Gino was attracted to California and, in 1952, he left for Los Angeles. His great qualities as a pastry chef helped him to find a job at the Ambassador, the hotel where Robert Kennedy was killed in 1968. His life is focused on work. A loner by nature, he struggles to integrate into the American reality, but fate would have it that one day one of his workmates invites him to go out dancing. It is that night that he meets Bernice. They fall in love and shortly after they get married. Their first and only daughter, Linda, is born and it is at that time that a gentleman named Newman proposes to Gino to buy his pastry shop in Redondo Beach. Gino's only economic resource is his salary, but he understands that this is an opportunity not to be missed. With Mr. Newman, he agrees to pay in installments and, after only three years of operation, Gino manages to repay his debt. "Da Gino" becomes the meeting place where every morning you stop for a cup of coffee and a donut. For 50 years his bread and pastries were the most famous in the entire region. At almost 80 years old, Gino decides to retire and abandon the business. Gino and Bernice retire to their home in Redondo Beach, until one day a few months ago she doesn't feel well, decides to go to the doctor, and after due diligence, it turns out that Bernice has cancer. Bernice is hospitalized, and Linda, with her daughter Amber, moves to her father's house to take care of her. Gino struggles to accept the new reality, everything is changing before his eyes and he helplessly can do nothing but accept the fate of things. "Gino's cheeseburger" recounts the days of this man during the dramatic phase of change, retraces his experience, but above all, it puts the gaze on the reality of an old man who, without being able to do to, sees everything that is most dear to him slip away.
