Abstract: Sarajevo, maggio 1993: circondata dalle truppe serbe sulle montagne armate di artiglieria pesante, non c'è scampo per la città assediata. Nessuna via d'uscita, nessuna via d'entrata. Durante la notte, persone disperate tentano di attraversare la pista dell'aeroporto - che costituisce il loro unico collegamento con il mondo esterno. Ma l'aeroporto è controllato dalle truppe dell'ONU. Non appena i soldati dell'UNPROFOR scorgono le sagome dei rifugiati, inondano la pista di luce abbagliante, costringendoli così a mettersi al riparo dai cecchini serbi. La loro salvezza: un passaggio sotterraneo segreto sotto l'aeroporto, che si estende per 800 metri, che richiese la rimozione di circa 2.800 metri cubi di terra usando solo la forza muscolare. Equipaggiati con gli strumenti più primitivi - pale, picconi e carriole - riuscirono in soli quattro mesi a creare un collegamento sotto l'aeroporto con il mondo esterno, senza essere notati dall'UNPROFOR e dai soldati serbi che assediano la città. Negli anni successivi il tunnel diventa l'ancora di salvezza della città. Un flusso costante di persone striscia avanti e indietro attraverso il passaggio, largo appena un metro e alto un metro e mezzo, portando in città generi alimentari, benzina, petrolio, medicine e soprattutto armi. Sono stati posati persino un cavo ad alta tensione da 12 megawatt e una conduttura per il carburante. Il tunnel salvò la città assediata di Sarajevo e fu l'inizio della carriera di molti profittatori di guerra. Dietro le facciate restaurate e l'apparenza di un'attività vivace, ricordi dolorosi, sentimenti di vendetta e recriminazioni reciproche ancora bruciano. Tenuta insieme da una fragile pace, la moderna metropoli europea di Sarajevo porta ancora oggi le onnipresenti cicatrici della sanguinosa guerra civile. Il film racconta le storie drammatiche associate al tunnel, prima, durante e dopo la sua costruzione. Mostra come il tunnel è arrivato a plasmare la vita delle persone fino ai giorni nostri.
Sarajevo, May 1993: Surrounded by Serbian troops in the mountains armed with heavy artillery, there is no escape the besieged city. No way out, now way in. During the night, desperate people attempt to cross the airport’s runway – which forms they only link to the outside world. But the airport is controlled by UN troops. As soon as the UNPROFOR soldiers make out the silhouettes of the refugees they bathe the runway in dazzling floodlight, thus forcing them to run the gauntlet of the Serbian snipers. Their salvation: a secret underground passage beneath the airport, stretching for 800 meters, requiring the removal of some 2,800 cubic meters of earth using muscle power only. Equipped with the most primitive of tools – shovels, pickaxes and wheelbarrows – they succeed within just four months to forge a link under the airport to the outside world, unnoticed by the UNPROFOR and the Serbian soldiers besieging city. Over the next few years the tunnel becomes lifeline of the city. A constant stream of people crawl back and forth through the passage, just one meter wide and one-fifty high, bringing food stuffs, petrol, oil, medicines and above all weapons into the city. Even a 12 megawatt high-voltage cable, together with a fuel pipeline were laid. The tunnel saved the besieged city of Sarajevo and was the beginning of the career of many war profiteers. Behind the restored facades and veneer of bustling activity, painful memories, feelings of retribution and mutual recriminations still smoulder. Held together by a fragile peace, the modern European metropolis of Sarajevo today still bears the omnipresent scars of the bloody civil war. The film relates the dramatic stories associated with the tunnel, before, during and after its construction. It shows how the tunnel came to shape the lives of people until the present day.
