Abstract: Ualdino Caceres è un ex operaio che, da diciassette anni, vive all’interno della sua ex fabbrica (uno zuccherificio), ora abbandonata. Il suo volto porta i segni di una vita di stenti e sembra aderire perfettamente alla desolazione dei locali in rovina dove trascorre il suo tempo. L’uomo racconta la sua storia, la sua esistenza passata, l’omicidio di cui si è reso colpevole e che ha cambiato tutto. Ma quello che resta è il presente; e il presente è fatto soprattutto di memoria. Ualdino racconta alla macchina da presa di come, ogni tanto, vaghi per i locali abbandonati della fabbrica. Ma la memoria è soprattutto una canzone, "Dos caminos", del gruppo argentino Los Rancheros; una canzone il cui testo ci trasporta dolcemente verso la storia di Ualdino, raccontata nel film con rispetto e delicatezza. Una storia singola, che riguarda un solo uomo, ma che diventa, nel finale del film, storia collettiva, di un intero popolo. "La canzone, che egli inizia ad un certo punto a cantare, ha per lui un significato particolare, fin dal suo incarceramento. Sorpreso mentre dormiva, egli ha ucciso il suo assalitore per autodifesa, ed è stato condannato a sei anni di prigione. Nonostante questi ricordi dolorosi, il pezzo fa ancora luccicare gli occhi di Ualdino, perché non potrebbe esserci descrizione migliore del suo destino” (A. Fernandéz Mouján).
Ualdino Caceres has lived for seventeen years in the abandoned sugar factory where he was once employed. His face carries the marks of a life of poverty, and seems to be at one with the derelict building where he lives. The man tells the story of his life, of his past and the murder he committed that changed his life. But what sticks with us is the present, and the present is mainly about memory. Ualdino confides his recollections to the camera, which every now and then pans around the ruins of the factory. Memory is above all a song, "Dos caminos", by the Argentine band Los Rancheros, the lyrics of which gently transport us into Ualdino’s story, respectfully and sensitively related in the film. It is the story of just one man, but in the finale it becomes the collective story of a whole people. "The song, which he starts singing at one point, has acquired special meaning for him since his imprisonment. Surprised in his sleep, he killed his attacker in self-defence and was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment. Despite this painful memory, the tune still makes Ualdino’s eyes light up, for there could be no better description of his own destiny" (A. Fernandéz Mouján).
