Abstract: Quando il regista di questo film - Elmar Szücs - è diventato padre, si è improvvisamente reso conto che non aveva realizzato nulla nella sua vita. Era la stessa storia per più o meno tutti i suoi compagni. Avevano tutti circa trent'anni ed erano ancora nel bel mezzo degli studi - o stavano per iniziare un nuovo corso. Insieme a tre dei suoi più cari compagni di scuola, il regista decide di partire alla ricerca dello stato d'animo che pervade una generazione di trentenni di oggi in Germania. Come sono cresciuti, che tipo di educazione hanno avuto? Quali erano le aspettative dei loro genitori e dei loro insegnanti? Cosa si aspettavano loro stessi dalla vita? E perché tutto si è rivelato così diverso dal previsto? Nel loro viaggio di ritorno all'isola di Amrum, sul Mare del Nord, dove hanno trascorso la giovinezza, i quattro uomini cercano di trovare le risposte alle loro domande. Il viaggio li aiuta a fare alcune scoperte su se stessi e, gradualmente, lo "stato d'animo di una generazione" comincia ad emergere. Sembra che tutti loro appartengano a una "generazione indecisa", una generazione che cerca di lasciare aperte tutte le opzioni, che rifiuta di prendere un impegno definitivo per paura di perdere un'opportunità. E così continuano ad aspettare il momento in cui inizierà la vera vita. Solo che ora finalmente cominciano a capire che sono già lì: nel bel mezzo della vita.
When this film’s director - Elmar Szücs - became a father he suddenly realized that he hadn’t really achieved anything in his life. It was the same story for more or less all of his mates. They were all around thirty years of age and were still in the midst of their studies – or about to begin a new course of study. Together with three of his closest school friends the director decided to set off in search of the mood that pervades a generation of today’s thirty-years-olds in Germany. How did they grow up, what kind of upbringing did they have? What were their parents’ and their teachers’ expectations? What did they themselves expect from life? And why has everything turned out so differently? As they travel back to the North Sea island of Amrum where they spent their youth the four men try to find answers for their questions. Their journey helps them to make a few discoveries about themselves and, gradually, the "mood" of a generation begins to emerge. It seems that they all belong to an "Indecisive Generation", one that tries to leave all its options open; that refuses to make a firm commitment for fear of missing out on an opportunity. And so they continue to wait for the moment when their real lives will begin. Except that now they finally begin to grasp the fact that they are already there: in the midst of life.
