Abstract: Il coltan - o "oro grigio", come viene spesso soprannominato - è presente in telefoni cellulari, computer e navigatori satellitari. Questo metallo viene estratto esclusivamente dai ricchi sottosuoli della Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Per la prima volta una telecamera è riuscita a filmare il dietro le quinte delle zone minerarie, fuori dai confini della provincia del Katanga, fino al Nord Kivu. In "The Mines of Hell", incontriamo i minatori congolesi che vanno 150 piedi sotto terra, ogni giorno, per la misera somma di 1 dollaro al giorno. Le gallerie scavate nella pietra friabile che vi prevale, rischiano di crollare da un momento all'altro. Nel frattempo, sopra le loro teste, si scatena la guerra civile, con tanto di regolare saccheggio delle risorse. Seguendo la vita di varie persone, questo toccante documentario dimostra come la giovane democrazia congolese si sta sforzando di stabilire una redistribuzione duratura delle risorse minerarie, così come un governo efficiente e un'educazione efficace per le masse. Tutti questi sforzi illustrano come la Repubblica Democratica del Congo stia gradualmente cercando di riconquistare la propria libertà attraverso il nutrimento delle sue risorse intellettuali e minerarie.
Coltan – or “gray gold”, as it is often nicknamed - is present in cell phones, computers and satellite navigators. This metal is extracted exclusively from the rich sub-soils of the Democratic Republic of Congo. For the first time ever, a camera has managed to film behind the scenes in the out-of-bounds mining areas of the Katanga province, as far as North Kivu. In “The Mines of Hell” , we get to meet Congolese miners who go 150 feet underground, daily, for the paltry sum of 1 dollar per day. The tunnels dug in the crumbly stone that is prevalent there are in danger of collapsing at any moment. Meanwhile, above their heads, a civil war is waging, complete with regular pillaging of resources. By following the lives of various people, this poignant documentary demonstrates how the young Congolese democracy is striving to establish long-lasting redistribution of mine resources, as well as an efficient government and effective education for the masses. All these efforts illustrate how the Democratic Republic of Congo is gradually trying to win back its freedom through the nurturing of its intellectual and mining resources.
