Hasankeyf is an ancient village on the banks of the Tigris river, in Assyrian and Byzantine Mesopotamia, where the cultures of Central Asia and Persia crossed with those of Europe. Today, 5,000 live in Hasankeyf, most of them of Kurdish origin: a community that has lived as if suspended since the Ilisu dam project was launched in 1954, which once completed will submerge Hasankeyf under 30 metres of water. But in Hasankeyf everything continues as if it were supposed to happen. The children play in the water, the adults cultivate the land and take the animals to pasture, the girls milk the goats by the river, the small restaurants wait for the tourists who come to Hasankeyf during the year. There is no work in Hasankeyf. The prospects of life are limited to the poor reality of the village. No one wants to invest in tourism, which could become flourishing, if only the village were still there in a few years. While elsewhere the fate of this place is being decided, a whole community lives in limbo with no real news of their destiny and an exhausting indecision about what to do.
