Abstract: Medusa è il nome di un sommergibile italiano della seconda guerra mondiale. Il 30 gennaio 1942, silurato dal sommergibile inglese Thorn, affondò nel mare Adriatico al largo di Pola (Istria). Quattordici marinai rimasero imprigionati, a circa trenta metri di profondità, nella parte di poppa. Torpediniere, sommergibili, piroscafi, motoscafi, pontoni e palombari vennero per salvarli. I marinai sul fondo attesero pazienti, comunicando attraverso il filo della boa telefonica con i soccorritori in superficie. Poi il vento si alzò e cominciò a nevicare… Un uomo, uno scrittore, diventa esploratore di memorie. Vuole comprendere che cosa accadde quel 30 gennaio del 1942; incontra testimoni, familiari dei marinai scomparsi, visita luoghi e archivi. Il percorso narrativo del film si snoda fra tappe e registri talora discordanti, addirittura stridenti agli occhi dello storico di professione. Laddove memorie, fotografie, documenti, film d’epoca non sono sufficienti a spiegare o ad evocare i fatti accaduti, la scena rivive in flashback sotto forma di cartoni animati.
Medusa is the name of an Italian World War II submarine. On 30 January 1942, it was torpedoed by the British submarine Thorn and sank in the Adriatic Sea off Pula (Istria). Fourteen sailors were imprisoned in the stern, at a depth of about thirty meters. Torpedo boats, submarines, steamers, motorboats, pontoons and divers came to rescue them. The sailors on the bottom waited patiently, communicating through the wire of the telephone buoy with the rescuers on the surface. Then the wind picked up, it began to snow on the sea. A man, a writer, becomes an explorer of memories. He wants to understand what happened on that January 30, 1942; he meets witnesses, relatives of the missing sailors, visits places and archives. The film's narrative path winds through stages and registers that are sometimes discordant, even jarring to the eyes of a professional historians. Where memories, photographs, documents, and period films are not sufficient to explain or evoke the events that occurred, the scene relives in flashbacks in animation form.
