In a remote South African desert village, we follow three six-year-old children in their first year of school. We see them grow over the course of this crucial year: as new students and as young citizens learning to identify and place themselves in this isolated and often difficult world. Lienkie wants to be a policewoman, Elfansou wants to be a cowboy and Danylisha dreams of being a doctor. But growing up poor in Nieu Bethesda means facing many difficulties. Unemployment, alcohol abuse and HIV/AIDS add to the challenges faced by the village children. But a dedicated teacher and the encouragement of their families can turn things around. "If you give them love, they can go far", says their teacher, and she does her best to succeed.
