Abstract: Un documentario sulle prime vere vittime del riscaldamento globale. Shishmaref è l'unico insediamento umano di Sarichef, isola situata in Alaska, leggermente a sud del circolo polare, e abitata da un esiguo numero di famiglie Inupiaq che, per secoli, si sono guadagnate un'esistenza autosufficiente grazie alla caccia, loro principale fonte di sostentamento. Oggi l'insediamento è diventato il centro di un duplice dramma di vasta portata e in continua crescita: la crescente influenza esercitata dall'uomo bianco, con l'arrivo della televisione satellitare, dei vestiti e dei cibi occidentali, ha causato un profondo scisma tra le generazioni; allo stesso tempo un'altra minaccia mette lentamente in pericolo il villaggio, con immense conseguenze per il suo futuro. A causa dell'aumento della temperatura della terra, le calotte polari hanno cominciato a sciogliersi e, nel corso delle stagioni, il mare si ghiaccia molto più tardi rispetto al passato. Le tempeste invernali colpiscono l'isola per periodi più lunghi, causando enormi danni sulle coste. Ampie zone di Shishmaref sono già state inghiottite dall'oceano. Per sicurezza 14 case hanno dovuto essere spostate più zone più alte. Le previsioni dicono che Shishmaref scomparirà in meno di dieci anni. Gli Inupiaq stanno affrontando un trasferimento forzoso sulla terraferma che cambierà ulteriormente la vita di questa comunità isolata e li separerà per sempre dalle anime dei loro antenati, sepolti sull'isola.
A documentary about the first actual victims of global warming. Shishmaref is the sole settlement on Sarichef, an island situated slightly south of the polar circle in Alaska. Inhabited by a small number of Inupiaq families who, for centuries, have been eking out a self-supporting existence with hunting as their main source of living. The settlement has become the arena of a twofold far-reaching and growing drama. The increasing influence of the ‘white man’, resulting in the arrival of satellite television, western clothes and food, has caused a deep schism between generations. At the same time, another threat slowly jeopardizes the village, with immense consequences for its future. Due to the increasing temperature of the Earth, the polar caps have started to melt and the sea becomes frozen over much later in the year than in the past. The winter storms terrorize the island for much longer, causing enormous damage to its coastline. Large areas of Shishmaref have already swallowed by the ocean. In order to save them, 14 houses had to be moved further up on the island. It has been predicted that Shishmaref will disappear in less then ten years. The Inupiaq are facing a forced move tot the mainland, which will change life in this isolated community even further and separate them from the souls of their ancestors, who are buried on the island.
