Abstract: Lina Yang ha monitorato la vita di un orfanotrofio a Qingdao per 10 anni, in particolare la vita quotidiana dei bambini con bisogni speciali. Dall'inizio degli anni '90, periodo in cui il governo cinese ha criticato i media occidentali per la loro parzialità, gli orfanotrofi cinesi hanno strettamente controllato l'accesso dei media. A causa della difficoltà di ottenere l'ingresso, è estremamente difficile sapere quale sia stata la situazione per molti anni. Accompagnato da una madre che vive vicino al centro di Qingdao, ho potuto tuttavia filmare questo soggetto delicato in condizioni privilegiate. È lì che, nel 1995, ho scoperto per la prima volta decine di bambini abbandonati dai loro genitori. Nei 10 anni seguenti, sono tornato a visitarli ogni anno e sono diventato loro amico. Tuttavia, durante questi 10 anni di interviste, ho osservato che il complesso d'inferiorità e la paura provata dagli orfani di fronte alla società non sono scomparsi. Sono maturata e cambiata, proprio come i bambini. In particolare negli ultimi tre anni, quando sono diventata madre per la prima volta, e ho capito che, per un bambino, l'amore è più importante di qualsiasi miglioramento materiale delle sue condizioni di vita. In effetti, questa osservazione non vale solo per gli orfanotrofi: lo sviluppo economico condotto a scapito dei valori umani sarà chiaramente la rovina della Cina di domani. Questo film ha lo scopo di sensibilizzare un maggior numero di persone su questa questione.
Lina Yang has been monitoring the life of an orphanage in Qingdao for 10 years, and more particularly the daily life of children who are unlike other children. Since the start of the 1990s, a period during which the Chinese government criticised the Western media for biased reporting, Chinese orphanages have strictly controlled access by the media. Because of the difficulty of gaining entrance, it is extremely difficult to know what the situation has been like there for many years. Accompanied by a mother living close to the Qingdao centre, it was thus nevertheless possible for me to film this delicate subject in privileged conditions. It was there that, in 1995, I discovered for the first time dozens of children abandoned by their parents. Over the following 10 years, I came back to visit them every year, and I became their friend. As I listened to them relating their dreams of glory, I filmed their evolution over a decade. During this period and thanks to the financial support of the authorities, this place - Qingdao - has become a shop window for the attention given to social problems by the government. The orphanage today is of satisfactory size and is adequately equipped. Nevertheless, throughout these 10 years of interviews, I have observed that the inferiority complex and the fear felt by the orphans in the face of society have not disappeared. I have matured, and changed, just as the children have. Particularly over the last three years, as I became a mother for the first time, and now have an intimate understanding of the fact that, for a child, love is more important than any material improvement in the child's living conditions. In fact, this observation is not only true of orphanages: economic development carried out to the detriment of human values will clearly be the bane of the China of tomorrow. This film is intended to make more people aware of this question.
