Abstract: Un viaggio in un'altra New York. Sotto la città ci sono 18 livelli sotterranei e 468 stazioni della metropolitana, in attività o abbandonate; un labirinto di corridoi e chilometri di gallerie in disuso. Donne e uomini si rifugiano qui, nelle viscere della città; sgusciano dentro e fuori; strisciano; sopravvivono. Per incontrare questo popolo delle tenebre bisogna scendere scale dimenticate, sollevare griglie, botole, scivolare giù nei buchi, confondersi nell'oscurità. E poi bisogna scendere ancora. Non si sa quante persone vivano qui, nascoste alla città. Sfuggono alla luce del giorno così come sfuggono alle statistiche; nessuno riesce mai ad incontrarli. Chantal Lasbats ha impiegato un anno per conoscerli. È riuscita a conquistare la fiducia di "quelli di sotto" che, in alcuni casi, vivono sottoterra da oltre 30 anni, sempre braccati senza tregua dalla polizia: vite di tenebra nel regno dell'esclusione. Per la "gente di sopra" sono materia di leggende e sono stati soprannominati "the mole people" (il popolo delle talpe): miserabili rifiuti del sogno americano.
A journey to another New York. Beneath the city are 18 underground levels and 468 underground stations, in operation or abandoned; a labyrinth of corridors and miles of disused tunnels. Women and men take refuge here, in the bowels of the city; they slip in and out; they crawl; they survive. To meet these people of darkness you have to descend forgotten stairs, lift grates, trap doors, slide down holes, blend into the darkness. And then you have to go down again. It is not known how many people live here, hidden from the city. They elude daylight just as they elude statistics; no one ever manages to meet them. It took Chantal Lasbats a year to meet them. She managed to win the trust of 'those below' who, in some cases, have been living underground for over 30 years, relentlessly pursued by the police: lives of darkness in the realm of exclusion. For the 'people above' they are the stuff of legends and have been nicknamed 'the mole people': miserable rejects of the American dream.
