Abstract: Etiopia, luglio 2007, tre mesi prima dell'inizio del millennio etiope. Siamo a Hagere Selam, un piccolo villaggio negli altipiani settentrionali dell'Etiopia. Gli studenti della decima classe hanno appena finito il loro esame finale. Il risultato è molto importante, perché cambierà le loro vite. Se superano l'esame, possono trasferirsi nella città di Mekelle. Anche Tsega, se passa e sua madre la lascierà andare, potrà studiare a Mekelle. Se verrà bocciata dovrà rimanere nel villaggio, sposarsi e fare figli; come è accaduto alle sue sorelle maggiori. Gli studenti devono aspettare tre mesi prima di conoscere l'esito dell'esame. Tsega vive con sua madre, una delle sue sorelle, suo fratello e tre nipoti in una piccola casa del villaggio. Discute con le altre ragazze su chi passerà o meno, su quale materia era più difficile. Aiuta sua madre nelle faccende domestiche, nella preparazione della prossima festa del millennio; litiga molto con la madre. Ama sua madre, ma c'è un enorme divario di età e di cultura. Lei è una ragazza moderna mentre sua madre è ancora molto tradizionale. A sua madre non piace l'idea che Tsega vada in città: "Non ti lascio andare". Tsega pensa che sua madre non abbia idea della sua relazione con Romha. Tsega e Romha passano un po' di tempo insieme, ma alla fine Romha decide di sposare un'altra ragazza, perché come dice un amico di Tsega , lei è troppo povera. Dopo la celebrazione del nuovo millennio, il risultato è arrivato. Tutti gli studenti si riuniscono nel complesso della scuola. Tsega è molto nervosa. Ricevono i risultati, alcuni passano ma la maggior parte sono stati bocciati. L'unica che non riceve i risultati è Tsega. Aspetta e aspetta finché tutti hanno avuto i risultati. Ma il suo è scomparso... E adesso? Le consigliano di andare a Mekelle. Non è mai stata a Mekelle prima. Dopo un lungo viaggio in autobus arriva in città ed inizia ad esplorarla. Dopo una lunga giornata riceve finalmente il suo risultato... passerà o no? sarà in grado di dire a tutti nel villaggio la buona notizia?
Ethiopia, July 2007, three months before the start of the Ethiopian millennium. We are in Hagere Selam, a small village in the northern highlands of Ethiopia. The tenth grade students have just finished their final exams. The result is very important, because it will change their lives. If they pass the exam, they can move to the town of Mekelle. Tsega too, if she passes and her mother lets her go, can study in Mekelle. If she fails, she will have to stay in the village, get married and have children; like her older sisters. Students have to wait three months before they know the outcome of the exam. Tsega lives with her mother, one of her sisters, her brother and three grandchildren in a small house in the village. She argues with the other girls about who will or will not pass, which subject was more difficult. She helps her mother with the housework, with the preparations for the upcoming millennium festival; she argues a lot with her mother. She loves her mother, but there is a huge gap in age and culture. She is a modern girl while her mother is still very traditional. Her mother does not like the idea of Tsega going to the city: 'I won't let you go'. Tsega thinks her mother has no idea about her relationship with Romha. Tsega and Romha spend some time together, but in the end Romha decides to marry another girl, because as a friend of Tsega's says, she is too poor. After the celebration of the new millennium, the result is in. All the students gather in the school compound. Tsega is very nervous. They receive the results, some pass but most fail. The only one who does not receive the results is Tsega. She waits and waits until everyone has got their results. But hers disappeared... What now? They advise her to go to Mekelle. She has never been to Mekelle before. After a long bus ride she arrives in the city and starts to explore it. After a long day she finally gets her result... will she pass or not? Will she be able to tell everyone in the village the good news?
