In the past: after the Second World War, Joris Ivens and Marion Michelle travel through Eastern Europe to make a film about people, new life and hope ("Pierwsze lata", 1947). In the present: Bulgarian director Valentin Valchev and his crew set off on a journey through post-communist Eastern Europe. Valentin promised 93-year-old Marion Michelle that he would revisit the places she had filmed 60 years earlier and make a new film of them. She promised to stay alive in time to see the finished film. He shows her what he has found. Through the camera she gets back in touch with the people from those places. What does it mean to make films in Europe today and what did it mean then? The question inspires a reflection on the purpose and aims of filmmaking. Both filmmakers agree that a film is a way to engage with people rather than ideas.
