Abstract: Seguendo le gesta e gli incontri di Christiane Devleminck nel corso di una giornata, il documentario traccia il percorso di un’aviatrice, all’alba dei suoi ottant’anni, che - con entusiasmo e un incredibile spirito giovanile – trasmette da una generazione all’altra la passione e il piacere di volare. Osservando Christiane Devleminck fare il pieno di benzina al suo bimotore Aztec prima d’impadronirsi del cielo, per poi atterrare e di nuovo decollare, questa volta col suo Robin e un nuovo allievo, poco a poco si delinea, col susseguirsi delle testimonianze, la sua personalità fuori dal comune. Grazie agli archivi privati – costituiti principalmente di film in Super 8 et 8mm – si evoca la carriera dell’aviatrice. Da bambina si ammalò di tubercolosi, venne curata in un sanatorio in Svizzera dal quale la piccola Christiane osservava gli aerei volare. all'insaputa del padre Christiane, soprannominata 'la Miss', imparò a volare su ski sul lago ghiacciato. Alla fine degli anni quaranta, sfidando tutte le convenzioni, divenne meccanico poi pilota in un universo totalmente maschile. All’aeroporto di Grimbergen creò la sua scuola DAS (Devleminck Air Service) che divenne rapidamente la scuola aeronautica di riferimento in Belgio negli anni cinquanta. La camera segue Christiane mentre opera sotto le ruote d’atterraggio del suo bimotore: per ore aggiusta e controlla i motori dei suoi aerei, a volte nel freddo glaciale del suo hangar, senza lamentarsi mai. E poi volare, volare! Le mani ancora sporche di olio del motore: ecco ciò che la rende più felice!
Following the exploits and encounters of Christiane Devleminck over the course of a day, the documentary traces the path of an aviatrix, at the dawn of her eighties, who - with enthusiasm and an incredible youthful spirit - passes on from one generation to the next the passion and pleasure of flying. Watching Christiane Devleminck fill up her twin-engine Aztec with petrol before taking to the skies, then landing and taking off again, this time with her Robin and a new pupil, her unusual personality is gradually revealed through the succession of testimonies. Thanks to the private archives - consisting mainly of Super 8 and 8mm films - the aviatrix's career is recalled. As a child, she fell ill with tuberculosis and was treated in a sanatorium in Switzerland, from where little Christiane watched the planes fly. Unbeknownst to her father, Christiane, nicknamed 'the Miss', learned to fly skis on the frozen lake. At the end of the 1940s, defying all conventions, she became a mechanic then a pilot in an entirely male universe. At Grimbergen airport she set up her DAS (Devleminck Air Service) school, which quickly became the reference aviation school in Belgium in the 1950s. The camera follows Christiane as she works under the landing wheels of her twin-engine plane: for hours she adjusts and checks the engines of her planes, sometimes in the freezing cold of her hangar, without ever complaining. And then fly, fly! Her hands are still stained with engine oil: that's what makes her happiest!
