She is always on the move to reach out to people, people who need her presence, people deprived of their rights, people who are marginalised. Mahasveta Devi is 83 years old and is a social activist who has worked for years with marginalised communities, including tribals and landless workers in India. Mahasveta Devi is also one of India's leading literary figures, a prolific author of short fiction and novels in the Bengali language. What is unique about her writings is that they are all drawn from real experiences of deprivation and marginalisation that lead to consequent struggle and resistance. Mahasveta Devi received the Jnanpith Award in 1996 and the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1997. She has also been awarded the Padma Sree and the Padma Bibhushan. For the past two years, Drik India has been following the legendary writer and activist on her travels to the tribal belts of India, with her never-ending passion to reach out to marginalised people to let them know that she is on their side in their daily struggle for existence.
