Abstract: Shanghai negli anni '30: il denaro domina e la corruzione dilaga in questa città la cui reputazione nefasta attira i più audaci avventurieri del mondo. Il commercio dell'oppio è sotto il controllo delle triadi cinesi, che gestiscono le loro operazioni dalle concessioni straniere. Seguendo le tracce del padrino cinese della Green Gang, Du Yuesheng, che governa la città, ci imbarchiamo in un'esplorazione del periodo in cui banchieri e trafficanti di droga, rivoluzionari e nazionalisti hanno fatto la storia - un periodo in cui le nuove idee che avrebbero dato vita alla Cina moderna stavano appena germogliando. Shanghai in the 1930s: money rules and corruption runs rampant in this city whose nefarious reputation attracts the world's most daring adventurers. The opium trade is under the control of Chinese triads, who run their operations from foreign concessions. Following in the footsteps of the Green Gang's Chinese godfather, Du Yuesheng. who rules the city, we embark on an exploration of the period when bankers and drug dealers, revolutionaries and nationalists made history - a time when the new ideas that would give birth to modern China were just germinating. Digging into the archives, walking around the city, talking to living witnesses, we enter the shady world of the triads and their sprawling relationships within the city and the lucrative opium trade. Direct witnesses from this period shed light on the complexities and myriad facets of a city where money, drugs, gambling and prostitution reigned supreme, so much so that it deserves comparison with prohibitionist Chicago. In 1932, dramatic events rocked the city as the power acquired by the triads became a threat to westerners. The armed conflict unleashed by Japan served as a precursor to a new distribution of power. Albert Londres, one of the most famous investigative journalists of the time, travelled to Shanghai to report on the upheavals taking place. His explosive investigation burned in the fire on the ocean liner taking him back to France, but he left a rich and passionate portrait of the city in the 1930s. Previously unpublished archive material, old films, period newspapers, police reports, diplomatic correspondence, the journalism of Albert Londres and an exploration of present-day Shanghai (where traces of the past mingle with ultra-modern skyscrapers) draw a portrait of a world that continues to fascinate the West.
