Abstract: "Monks: The Transatlantic feedback" diretto da Dietmar Post (Germania/USA) e Lucía Palacios (Spagna) racconta la straordinaria storia del primo gruppo pop d'avanguardia della storia. I Monks erano 5 soldati americani nella Germania della guerra fredda che si autoproclamavano gli anti-Beatles. Usando tonalità heavy, profeti del nichilismo e del banjo elettrico, avevano strani tagli di capelli, si vestivano di nero, prendevano in giro i militari e suonavano più forte dei loro colleghi della metà degli anni Sessanta, quando inventarono ed imposero il krautrock, l'heavy metal, l'industrial, il punk e la musica techno. Si può sentire l'influenza da loro esercitata nei decenni successivi, dice Colin Greenwood dei Radiohead. Come la loro musica sia sopravvissuta al passare del tempo lo si può sentire nel doppio CD colonna sonora/tributo "Silver Monk Time" con cover di Jon Spencer, Fehlfarben, Goldenen Zitronen, International Noise Conspiracy, Alexander Hacke, Mouse on Mars, the Fall, Faust, Jason Forrest, F.S.K., Gudrun Gut, Alec Empire, Psychic TV, Alan Vega, Chicks on Speed e molti altri. Questo documentario non solo colloca il fenomeno Monks nel contesto sociale, storico e politico della musica pop tedesca del dopoguerra, ma rivela anche l'importanza del gruppo come primo matrimonio tra pop art e musica popolare, battendo sul tempo Andy Warhol e i Velvet Underground. I cinque protagonisti del film arrivarono in Germania nel 1961 come soldati e lasciarono il paese nel 1967 come eroi dell'avanguardia.
"Monks: The Transatlantic feedback" directed by Dietmar Post (Germany/USA) and Lucía Palacios (Spain) tells the extraordinary story of the first avant-garde pop group in history. The Monks were five American soldiers in Cold War Germany who called themselves the anti-Beatles. Using heavy tones, prophets of nihilism and electric banjos, they had strange haircuts, wore black, made fun of the military and played louder than their colleagues in the mid-1960s, when they invented and imposed krautrock, heavy metal, industrial, punk and techno music. You can feel their influence in the decades that followed, says Radiohead's Colin Greenwood. How their music has survived the passage of time can be heard on the double CD soundtrack/tribute "Silver Monk Time" with covers by Jon Spencer, Fehlfarben, Goldenen Zitronen, International Noise Conspiracy, Alexander Hacke, Mouse on Mars, the Fall, Faust, Jason Forrest, F.S.K., Gudrun Gut, Alec Empire, Psychic TV, Alan Vega, Chicks on Speed and many others. This documentary not only places the Monks phenomenon in the social, historical and political context of post-war German pop music, but also reveals the group's importance as the first marriage of pop art and popular music, beating Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground to the punch. The five protagonists of the film arrived in Germany in 1961 as soldiers and left the country in 1967 as heroes of the avant-garde.
