Abstract: Durante il turbolento regno di Rudolph Giuliani negli anni '90, quando Times Square veniva venduta alla Disney e i sex club venivano chiusi in favore dei fast food, ci fu un breve, luminoso, momento in cui le drag queen dominavano la vita notturna di New York. L'epicentro di quel momento era lo SqueezeBox, una festa settimanale di rock and roll pansessuale che aveva luogo nel night club "Don Hills". Nato come punto per incontro per i gay rock, che si sentivano estranei sia al mondo gay che a quello del rock, il party crebbe di notorietà, fino a diventare un evento di riferimento nella vita notturna cittadina e non solo. Riunendo due mondi apparentemente contraddittori, SqueezeBox ha ispirato lo spirito di accettazione che accomunava tutti coloro che passavano attraverso le sue porte. Quello che è successo per sette anni all'angolo tra Spring e Greenwich è stato un assemblaggio spesso esilarante, tutto rock e spesso piuttosto dissoluto che spaziava dal ridicolo al profano. Gli artisti sono stati incoraggiati a portare sul palco qualsiasi cosa potessero immaginare, generando atti artistici molto diversi tra loro, come il glam rock dei Toilet Boys o le suggestioni di ispirazione 'off-Broadway' degli Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Il documentario ricrea l'energia caotica, frenetica e impenitente del club e mette in luce le persone e i tempi che richiedevano qualcosa di originale in un mondo sempre più votato al capitalismo.
During Rudolph Giuliani's turbulent reign in the 1990s, when Times Square was being sold off to Disney and sex clubs were being shut down in favour of fast food restaurants, there was a brief, shining moment when drag queens dominated New York nightlife. The epicentre of that moment was the SqueezeBox, a weekly pansexual rock and roll party that took place in the 'Don Hills' nightclub. Born as a meeting point for gay rockers who felt alienated from both the gay and rock worlds, the party grew in popularity to become a landmark event in the city's nightlife and beyond. Bringing together two seemingly contradictory worlds, SqueezeBox inspired the spirit of acceptance that united all who passed through its doors. What happened for seven years on the corner of Spring and Greenwich was an often hilarious, all rock and often quite dissolute assemblage that ranged from the ridiculous to the profane. Performers were encouraged to bring whatever they could imagine to the stage, generating artistic acts as diverse as the glam rock of the Toilet Boys or the 'off-Broadway' inspired suggestions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The documentary recreates the chaotic, frenetic and unrepentant energy of the club and highlights the people and times that demanded something original in a world increasingly devoted to capitalism.
