Abstract: "Until the Light Takes Us"è una stupefacente, voyeuristica finestra sul morboso mondo del black metal norvegese, il genere musicale più malevolo che esista, i cui fondatori, sorprendentemente articolati, detengono un set completo composto da posizioni nazionaliste estreme, antisemite e anticristiane. A differenza dei vessilliferi del male che lo fanno solo per il gusto dello spettacolo, questi giovani amici mettono in pratica ciò che predicano, impegnandosi in incendi dilaganti di chiese, suicidi e - come notoriamente riportato dai media europei - omicidi. Il film esamina la nascita e l'arco esplosivo di questo genere, esplorando contemporaneamente l'idea che le reinterpretazioni dei media e dell'arte moderna lo abbiano alterato in modo irreversibile. I co-registi Aaron Aites e Audrey Ewell hanno trascorso due anni a Oslo, dove hanno ottenuto la fiducia del capobanda Varg Vikernes (alias Count Grishnack), architetto del movimento criminale. Insieme ad altri membri influenti del Circolo Nero, Vikernes ha dato ai registi un accesso intimo e senza precedenti al loro mondo oscuro. Il film racconta la vera storia dietro la musica e il caos, e rivela cosa è successo quando questi giovani artisti complicati non sono riusciti più controllare la scena pericolosa che avevano creato. "Until the Light Takes Us" is a stunning, voyeuristic window into the morbid world of Norwegian black metal, the most malevolent musical genre in existence, whose surprisingly articulate founders hold a full set of extreme nationalist, anti-Semitic and anti-Christian positions. Unlike the standard-bearers of evil who do it just for show, these young friends practice what they preach, engaging in rampant church burnings, suicides and - as famously reported in the European media - murders. The film examines the birth and explosive arc of this genre, while exploring the idea that reinterpretations of media and modern art have irreversibly altered it. Co-directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell spent two years in Oslo, where they gained the trust of ringleader Varg Vikernes (aka Count Grishnack), architect of the criminal movement. Together with other influential members of the Black Circle, Vikernes gave the filmmakers unprecedented and intimate access to their dark world. The film tells the true story behind the music and chaos, and reveals what happened when these complicated young artists could no longer control the dangerous scene they had created. Featuring interviews with black metal fan Harmony Korine and featuring the music of Black Dice, Boards of Canada, Burzum, Darkthrone, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Lesser, Mayhem, Múm, Sunn, Thorns and Ulver.
