Abstract: Il secolo appena concluso ha visto cambiamenti straordinari e terribili, tragedie incomprensibili e conquiste da sempre solo sognate. "Il secolo lungo" per Margherita Hack è cominciato a Firenze nel 1922, iniziata da genitori teosofi al rispetto per la vita, alla giustizia e alla libertà. Nel 1938 la sua professoressa di scienze, ebrea, viene cacciata a causa delle leggi razziali, Margherita abbandona l’infanzia ed entra da adulta nel caos della Guerra. Mentre Firenze è sotto assedio, la Hack scopre le stelle e comincia a muovere i primi passi nel mondo della ricerca; un cammino che la porterà lontano da casa, ma mai da se stessa. Gli anni della ricostruzione e poi della Guerra Fredda trascorsi all’interno della comunità scientifica internazionale, a Princeton, Berkeley, Mosca e Leningrado, l’emozione della corsa allo spazio e il crescere della coscienza sociale nel mondo scientifico, questa è la considerevole porzione di Novecento che Margherita Hack ha vissuto in prima linea. Infine l’approdo a Trieste, ancora intossicata dai 'veleni' della guerra, dove fonda e dirige l’Osservatorio per la Radioastronomia Solare e dove vive e lavora anche oggi. In 1938, her science teacher, a Jew, was expelled because of the racial laws, Margherita abandoned her childhood and entered the chaos of war as an adult. While Florence is under siege, Hack discovers the stars and begins to take her first steps in the world of research; a path that will take her far from home, but never from herself. The years of reconstruction and then of the Cold War spent in the international scientific community, at Princeton, Berkeley, Moscow and Leningrad, the excitement of the space race and the growth of social awareness in the scientific world: this is the considerable portion of the twentieth century that Margherita Hack lived in the front line. Finally, her arrival in Trieste, still intoxicated by the 'poisons' of war, where she founded and directed the Solar Radio Astronomy Observatory and where she still lives and works today.
