Abstract: Un gruppo di studenti liceali è in procinto di sostenere l’esame di stato, equivalente al diploma di maturità francese, a Kisangani (Repubblica Democratica del Congo). La camera di Dieudo Hamadi, giovane regista congolese, segue i ragazzi nei mesi precedenti all’esame, dai banchi della scuola - dai quali gli studenti vengono espulsi perché non hanno pagato le “commissioni agli insegnanti” - alla “maquis”, la casa comunale dove si ritirano per prepararsi collettivamente. Tra riti propiziatori, sedute di preghiera, tentativi di procurarsi i risultati dei test, nessuno pensa che il miglior modo per superare un esame... è studiare!
A group of high-school students is about to take the state exam, the equivalent of the French baccalaureate, in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The camera of Dieudo Hamadi, a young Congolese film director, has followed the kids throughout the months before the exam from their school desks from which they are expelled because they didn’t pay for the teachers’ ‘commissions’ to the maquis, the residence hall where they retire to study together. Among propitiatory rituals, prayer sessions, and attempts to get hold of the test keys, no one thinks that the best approach to pass an exam is to... study!
