Television documentary dedicated to the courage of the ancient Italian people who fought against attacks from the sea by Saracen pirates in order to capture men, women and children and supply the slave markets of North Africa. Some of the thousands of watchtowers that were built along the Ionian, Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts are filmed in detail. Hundreds of them have resisted the onslaught of man and nature and can still be visited. Costume re-enactments were filmed at the actual locations where the events took place. Most of the extras are probably descendants of the survivors of those attacks. The period of the pirate attacks dates back to 1500. Other parts of the programme cover 1,000 years of Mediterranean history, starting with the first watchtowers built on the island of Sardinia, around 1500 BC. The programme ends with the attack on the village of Ispani in 1532 by the Pasha Heyreddin (Barbarossa). Heyreddin was an admiral of the Ottoman Empire who attacked many cities in Italy, including Capri, where there is now a castle built by him.
