Abstract: Fino a pochi anni fa, né gli scienziati né il pubblico erano consapevoli che lo stretto di Gibilterra fosse un paradiso naturale così unico: in nessun altro luogo al mondo è possibile trovare così tante specie di balene che vivono in un'area così ristretta. Ma lo stretto è anche uno dei punti di strozzatura del commercio globale, con un volume di traffico marittimo che non ha eguali al mondo. Dove si incontrano le moderne vie di trasporto e le antiche rotte migratorie, si assiste a una resa dei conti tra i giganti dell'oceano. Le balene vengono investite, rimangono impigliate nelle eliche delle navi, vengono avvelenate dalle acque reflue o si arenano disorientate dall'inquinamento acustico sottomarino. Dieci anni fa, la svizzera Katharina Heyer ha scoperto che ci sono delle balene in questo incrocio tra Europa e Africa - e che queste balene mostrano comportamenti unici a causa della loro stretta coesistenza. Per proteggere il loro habitat, l'ex stilista ha dato una svolta alla propria vita e si è trasferita nella regione. Ma la sua lotta è simile alla battaglia di Davide contro Golia. Until a few years ago, neither scientists nor the public were aware that the Strait of Gibraltar is such a unique natural paradise: nowhere else in the world can so many species of whales be found living in such a small area. But the Strait is also one of the bottlenecks of global trade, with a volume of maritime traffic that is unparalleled in the world. Where modern transport routes and ancient migratory routes meet, there is a showdown between the giants of the ocean. Whales are run over, caught in the propellers of ships, poisoned by sewage or stranded disoriented by underwater noise pollution. Ten years ago, the Swiss Katharina Heyer discovered that there are whales in this crossroads between Europe and Africa - and that these whales display unique behaviours due to their close coexistence. To protect their habitat, the former fashion designer turned her life around and moved to the region. But her struggle is similar to the battle of David against Goliath. Yet Katharina Heyer is aiming high to help the animals. "The Last Giants - Oceans in Danger" documents her struggle to create a hospital for whales.
