Abstract: Nel corso dell'ultimo secolo, gli Stati Uniti hanno collocato in tutto il mondo una rete di basi militari senza precedenti nella storia. Oggi questa basi ammontano a più di 700, dislocate in oltre 100 paesi. Perché paesi come Germania, Italia e Giappone - più di 60 anni dopo la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e quasi 20 anni dopo la fine della Guerra Fredda - ospitano ancora centinaia di basi militari statunitensi e decine di migliaia di soldati americani? Che ruolo hanno le basi nel mantenere l'egemonia statunitense nel mondo? Come influenzeranno il nostro futuro? Una presenza militare globale è l'ultima risorsa di un impero in declino economico, politico e culturale? Come impattano le basi sulla vita delle popolazioni locali e come queste interagiscono con i loro vicini in uniforme? Il film si propone di rispondere queste e altre domande cruciali attraverso le parole di intellettuali di spicco, esperti in materia, leader politici e militari, ex funzionari del governo e della CIA, filosofi e attivisti politici - tra i quali abbiamo: Noam Chomsky, Gore Vidal, Chalmers Johnson e altri - e attraverso le storie, scioccanti ma molto significative, di coloro che sono direttamente interessati dalle basi USA: i cittadini di Vicenza, che lottano per fermare la costruzione dell'ennesima base militare nella loro città natale; gli isolani di Diego Garcia, espulsi con violenza dalla loro isola nell'Oceano Indiano per fare spazio a una base militare statunitense, e che da anni lottano per tornare nel loro luogo di nascita; le numerose donne giapponesi violentate dai soldati statunitensi a Okinawa; i vari movimenti in Europa e Asia che si battono per un mondo senza basi militari; così come coloro che vivono all'interno delle stesse basi: gli uomini e le donne che sono spesso inviati in terre lontane con poca o nessuna preparazione su quello che vi troveranno.
Over the last century, the United States has placed a network of military bases around the world that is unprecedented in history. Today, there are more than 700 such bases in over 100 countries. Why do countries like Germany, Italy and Japan - more than 60 years after the end of World War II and almost 20 years after the end of the Cold War - still host hundreds of US military bases and tens of thousands of American soldiers? What role do the bases play in maintaining US hegemony in the world? How will they affect our future? Is a global military presence the last resort of an empire in economic, political and cultural decline? How do bases impact on the lives of local populations and how do they interact with their uniformed neighbours? The film sets out to answer these and other crucial questions through the words of leading intellectuals, subject matter experts, political and military leaders, former government and CIA officials, philosophers and political activists - among whom we have: Noam Chomsky, Gore Vidal, Chalmers Johnson and others - and through the shocking but very significant stories of those directly affected by the US bases: the citizens of Vicenza, who are fighting to stop the construction of yet another military base in their hometown; the islanders of Diego Garcia, violently expelled from their island in the Indian Ocean to make way for a US military base, and who have been fighting for years to return to their place of birth; the many Japanese women raped by US soldiers in Okinawa; the various movements in Europe and Asia fighting for a world without military bases; as well as those who live within the bases themselves: the men and women who are often sent to distant lands with little or no preparation for what they will find there.
