Abstract: "Quando ero piccolo pensavo che mia madre fosse una regina. Aveva un sorriso abbagliante, lo sguardo freddo e un tono di voce autoritario che mi dicevano che era una regina. La sera, prima di dormire, mi faceva saltare sulle ginocchia e mi cantava "Hoppe Hoppe Reiter", quell'antica e crudele canzone tedesca per bambini". La professoressa Trude Dothan, 86 anni, è la prima donna dell'archeologia israeliana. È stata vincitrice del Premio Israele ed è un'esperta a livello internazionale di Filistei. Suo figlio, il musicista, scrittore e regista Dani Dothan, decide che è venuto il momento di indagare l'energica vita di sua madre. Ma poi lei fa una brutta caduta e, per la prima volta in vita sua, rimane bloccata in casa. Dani torna alla casa materna ed è allora che inizia il vero lavoro di scavo. Cercando tra armadi e cassetti, scopre una vita che sua madre gli aveva finora tenuto nascosto. Trude cataloga oggetti, disegni, persino maschere di morte. Strato dopo strato, Dani scopre un mondo che non ha mai conosciuto; mentre i vari strati si dipanano, così accade anche al rapporto tra madre e figlio.

Professor Trude Dothan, 86, is the first woman in Israeli archaeology. She is a former winner of the Israel Prize and an international expert on the Philistines. Her son, the musician, writer and director Dani Dothan, decides that the time has come to investigate his mother's energetic life. But then she has a bad fall and, for the first time in her life, is stuck in the house. Dani returns to her mother's house and that's when the real digging begins. Searching through cupboards and drawers, he discovers a life that his mother had so far kept hidden from him. Trude catalogues objects, drawings, even death masks. Layer by layer, Dani discovers a world he has never known. As the layers unravel, so does the relationship between mother and son.
