Abstract: In che modo, pochi secondi di una partita di calcio possono stravolgere la vita di un’intera famiglia? Cosa provano gli "uomini in nero" di fronte agli insulti e alle minacce dei tifosi? In "Les Arbitres", i tre registi, insieme al co-autore Jean Libon, rivelano la vita nascosta di questi uomini: "Volevo guardare laddove gli sguardi non si erano ancora posati, vivere il più vicino possibile ai loro dubbi, alle loro certezze e i loro interrogativi in quanto uomini, non solamente in quanto arbitri". Ci sono voluti più di otto anni per ottenere dalla UEFA il permesso di introdursi nel circuito chiuso dell’arbitraggio e, alla fine, l’autorizzazione è arrivata in occasione degli Europei di calcio del 2008. Il risultato è un film che riesce a divertire, commuovere ed avvincere al contempo. Un film alla ricerca di ciò che non si vede e non si sente, di ciò che resta dietro le quinte, delle storie e delle emozioni private nascoste dietro le immagini pubbliche e mediatiche. Tra paura e ambizione, tra spirito di corpo e minacce di morte, questo avvincente film descrive, come in un racconto epico, il lato nascosto del calcio dalla prospettiva degli arbitri e dei destini che portano appesi ad un fischietto.
How can a few seconds of a soccer match upset the live of an entire family? How do the "men in black" feel about fans’ insults and threats? In "Kill the Referee", the three filmmakers, together with the co-author Jean Libon, reveals the hidden life of these men: “I wanted to look at what wasn’t being looked at, get as close as possible to their doubts, beliefs and questions, as men as much as referees.” (Y. Hinant). It took more than eight years to get UEFA’s permission to enter into the closed circuit of refereeing. In the end, the authorization arrived during the European tournament in 2008. The result is a film that’s funny, moving and enthralling all at once. A film looking for what is neither seen nor heard, what’s behind the spotlight, the stories and private emotions off the public and media stage. Between fear and ambition, good spirit and death threats, this enthralling film depicts, like an epic story, the hidden side of soccer from the perspective of refs and the fates that hang on a whistle-blow.
