Abstract: "Red Poet"è un film biografico sul poeta laureato di San Francisco, Jack Hirschman. Sullo sfondo si trova North Beach, il quartiere della città che ha dato origine ai poeti beat, con i suoi caffè, gli alberghi a camera singola e la vita "da bohéme". La storia intreccia abilmente il poeta e il suo luogo, ed è raccontata attraverso le parole del poeta stesso. Il primo successo accademico di Hirschman a New York ha breve durata; negli anni Sessanta viene messo sulla lista nera degli insegnanti universitari per le sue idee politiche radicali. Il trasferimento a San Francisco segue un duro periodo vissuto come senzatetto e segnato dalla morte del figlio David. "Red Poet" is a biographical film about San Francisco poet laureate Jack Hirschman. In the background is North Beach, the neighbourhood of the city that gave rise to the beat poets, with its cafes, single-room hotels and bohemian life. The story deftly interweaves the poet and his place, and is told through the poet's own words. Hirschman's early academic success in New York was short-lived; in the 1960s he was blacklisted from university teaching for his radical political views. His move to San Francisco followed a difficult period of homelessness and the death of his son David. Nevertheless, Hirschman went on, persevered with Poetry, made a name for himself in Europe, received poetry prizes in Italy and finally gained recognition and public acclaim in his hometown of San Francisco. The Red Poet of San Francisco cries out against injustice and sings for the forgotten, the oppressed and the dispossessed.
