Abstract: "Redemption" accompagna tre giovani disertori statunitensi in Canada in un viaggio attraverso i ricordi, risalenti al periodo da loro trascorso in guerra. Il film ci mostra l'incertezza della loro stessa condizione presente, il labirinto della verità e dell'inganno, di colpa e di innocenza, dell'obbedienza e della disobbedienza. Per mancanza di prospettive o per ingenua ammirazione, erano stati attratti dall'esercito e si erano arruolati nelle forze armate coinvolte in missione di guerra in Afghanistan e in Iraq. Gli eventi e le esperienze vissute sul fronte li hanno scioccati, così hanno cercato delle vie legali per uscire dall'aeronautica, dalla guardia nazionale e dai marines mentre erano a casa in licenza - senza successo. Dopo mesi di agonia hanno intravisto una sola via d'uscita: voltare le spalle alla loro patria e fuggire oltre confine, in Canada come, molti anni fa, hanno fatto migliaia di persone durante la guerra nel Vietnam. Ma i tempi sono cambiati: l'esercito americano è una forza armata composta da volontari, gli eventi dell'11 settembre hanno avvicinato l'America e il Canada nelle loro visioni politiche. Ancora traumatizzati, i tre vivono insieme a Toronto, la loro abitazione è un luogo di solidarietà e conforto. La fragilità della loro amicizia passa attraverso i ricordi della guerra e la minaccia della deportazione è sempre presente nella loro vita quotidiana fatta di frustrazione e di noia.
"Redemption' takes three young US deserters in Canada on a journey through their memories of their time in the war. The film shows us the uncertainty of their own present condition, the labyrinth of truth and deception, guilt and innocence, obedience and disobedience. Out of a lack of prospects or naive admiration, they had been attracted to the army and enlisted in the armed forces involved in war missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. The events and experiences on the front line shocked them, so they sought legal ways out of the air force, national guard and marines while home on leave - without success. After months of agony, they saw only one way out: to turn their backs on their homeland and flee across the border to Canada, as thousands did many years ago during the Vietnam War. But times have changed: the American army is an armed force of volunteers, the events of 11 September have brought America and Canada closer together in their political visions. Still traumatised, the three live together in Toronto, their home a place of solidarity and comfort.
