Abstract: 1993: Il ventitreenne soldato austriaco Helmut R. parte come volontario per la guerra nei Balcani. Insieme a due amici si unisce all'esercito croato come mercenario. Per amore dell'avventura si vuole prendere una pausa dalla neutralità dell'Austria e mettere momentaneamente da parte la pace nella quale è cresciuto. Cercare contatti, ricevere la dotazione di armi, la prima missione, il primo morto, ricaricare l'arma, il secondo morto. Anche gli amici muoiono. La 'vacanza dalla pace' diventa routine quotidiana. 15 anni dopo Helmut R. ci parla delle sue esperienze di guerra e delle ragioni per cui si è arruolato come mercenario. Per lui, come per molti suoi commilitoni, era un gioco che non andava preso troppo sul serio. Era poco più di un normale addestramento, come nell'esercito. Per i primi due mesi nessuno era davvero consapevole del fatto che sarebbero andati in guerra, che avrebbero sparato a dei bersagli umani e che avrebbero ricevuto dei proiettili in risposta.
1993: The 23-year-old Austrian soldier Helmut R. leaves as a volunteer for the war in the Balkans. Together with two friends he joins the Croatian army as a mercenary. For the sake of adventure, he wants to take a break from Austrian neutrality and temporarily put aside the peace in which he has grown up. Seeking contacts, receiving weapons, first mission, first dead, reloading weapon, second dead. Friends also die. The 'holiday from peace' becomes a daily routine. 15 years later, Helmut R. tells us about his war experiences and the reasons why he enlisted as a mercenary. For him, as for many of his fellow soldiers, it was a game not to be taken too seriously. It was little more than normal training, like in the army. For the first two months no one was really aware that they would be going to war, that they would be shooting at human targets and receiving bullets in response.
