(L. Moullet)

The Southern French Alps is very rugged and hard of access. Even if modern means of communication and transport have opened it up to the rest of the world, in other ways it has remained closed, retaining an irreducible specificity and fierce pride. Over the decades a series of horrific crimes have been commited in this area of France, and other acts of senseless violence have continued to occur, as if in a kind of emulative dance. In an exhilirating vortex of self-representation, Luc Moullet attempts to investigate why there is so much violence in an apparently peaceful area far from the bustle and stress of the big cities. The filmmaker weaves together murders and other crimes in a deadpan, eccentric manner, listening to the stories of witnesses or even of those who have just heard talk about some of the bloody events that are reevoked. Making full use of his film-maker’s insight and sharp irony, Moullet produces something that oscillates between fiction and documentary, like a survey of crime. The "fait divers" of the French journalism tradition, or the so-called "crime news", really does become another fact, a different fact. But what if Luc Moullet himself has been infected by the virus that afflicts the Land of Madness? How can one distinguish reality from deceit? “Making lists and tables is very useful when making a film. Everyone does it. I believe that all art, especially modern art, is based on lists and enumerations. Take Homer, Joyce, Dos Passos, Ellroy, Solzhenitsyn, De Mille or Hitchcock. Of course there are false lists as well. The poetic epithet, the superfluous and decorative are all false art. Those who manage to produce the longest list are the best of all. Everything is based simply on a principle of non-exclusion. It is not the art of Henry James, Nick Ray, Pialat, Cassavetes and Visconti. Making lists is also a sign of a certain inability to adapt to the modern world – a way of compensating for this difficulty. It also expresses a desire to assimilate the immensity of the modern world.” (L. Moullet)
