Abstract: Leonardo Donadei, 'ballunaru' e schermidore, vive a Parabita. Tra le strade notturne e ovattate del paese, dove lavora fino a notte fonda al pallone di 16 metri che deve essere pronto per la festa di S. Antonio Abate, l’inverno è scandito dall’odore dei riti del fuoco e della terra, nell’attesa della festa. I paesi dell’entroterra salentino sono tenuti svegli da voci d’osteria e accesi da luminarie, i Santi li proteggono dagli angoli delle strade. La scherma, come alcune tradizioni più antiche, continua a scrivere piccole frasi della propria storia all’ombra dei clamori. Codici, colpi, coltelli, parole taglienti abitano una lingua nodosa, introversa, che s’interroga sulla propria storia difficile. Leonardo è sospeso tra terra e aria, diviso tra la levità delle architetture di carta offerte in voto al Santo e la gestualità spietata e sicura del duello di strada. Il segreto di questa contraddizione, se c’è, è nascosto dietro la porta di legno del suo laboratorio: un fuoco d’artificio olfattivo e visivo, di favole di paese, fantasie infantili appese alla carta con la colla di farina, bande musicali e fiocchi di zucchero filato, di quando i Santi spiccavano il volo a cercare speranza per un’esistenza povera e difficile.
Leonardo Donadei, 'ballunaru' and fencer, lives in Parabita. In the muffled, nocturnal streets of the town, where he works late into the night on the 16-metre ball that has to be ready for the feast of S. Antonio Abate, winter is marked by the smell of the rituals of fire and earth, as he waits for the festival. The towns of the Salento hinterland are kept awake by tavern voices and lit by illuminations, the saints protecting them from street corners. Fencing, like some older traditions, continues to write little sentences of its own history in the shadow of the clamour. Codes, blows, knives and sharp words inhabit a gnarled, introverted language that questions its own difficult history. Leonardo is suspended between earth and air, torn between the lightness of the paper architectures offered as a vow to the Saint and the ruthless and confident gestures of the street duel. The secret of this contradiction, if there is one, is hidden behind the wooden door of his workshop: an olfactory and visual firework of village fairy tales, childish fantasies hung on paper with flour glue, marching bands and candy floss flakes, of when the saints took flight in search of hope for a poor and difficult existence.
