Gasnier, P. Nezan).

Taarab is an ancient music, typical of Zanzibar. It is a hybrid music, whose singing reflects Arab, Indian, African and European influences, as well as the many cultures that have shaped the archipelago's history. And it is a music that is deeply felt (and played) on the 'island of spices'. In a club in the historic centre of the capital, with the emblematic name of "Zanzibar Musical Club", musicians and singers come together every day to perform this particular music. Through charismatic characters such as Bi Kidude, one of the greatest Taarab singers, the images and sounds of the film allow the viewer to travel between different stimuli, places and musical forms that are ancient but very much alive and, above all, to perceive time as a suspension of everyday life, as a time not of action but of listening. "Taarab music is not created to make people dance, but to calm them down and make them reflect on the world. It is the most popular music in East Africa, from Somalia to Mozambique. The music of Zanzibar is deeply connected to the daily life of the island. It is so interdependent with the social reality that every musician and singer's primary goal is to move forward: with tradition, with culture" (Ph. Gasnier, P. Nezan).
