(M. Zran)

While in the world - in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine - wars are waged in the name of high ideals, dreams of power or mad destruction, in Zarzis, a small city in the south of Tunisia on the border of Libya, there exists a heterogeneous and peaceful community. The quiet life of the place lurks around Simon’s shop, a well-known Jewish merchant who embodies the infallible attachment to tradition and collective memory. Every day people interact around him, markedly modern or blown in from other walks of life. The discussions range from the exchange of opinions to confessions of one’s most intimate desires. Tahar, a progressive teacher, lights up while talking about the situation in the world and enumerating the evils that plague modern man, victim of globalization. Hadi, the 'cursed' painter kicked out of France, reflects on the false expectations of immigrants. Fatma, the never-idle wedding planner, is kept busy winters and summers collecting family secrets and acting as intermediary, middleman and messenger. Bachir, the cordial and obliging taxi driver, is everyone’s friend. Together, men and women talk about themselves, their lives, and the world. “Based on the realities of a town like Zarzis, this documentary film aims at determining the deep changes and upheavals undermining the societies of the South as a result of several endogenous as well as exogenous factors. Our approach consists in showing, through a collection of portraits, that these changes are perceived like a faceto-face between tradition and modernity, between those who, while being open to dialogue with the 'other', remain closely attached to their local cultural and identity roots; and between those who endeavor to turn exclusively to modernity or, on the contrary, to fundamentalist fantasies, hence the tentative illegal emigration, the Islamic indoctrination and the desperate suicidal reactions.” (M.
