The documentary tells the story of a film, the last one made by B-movies director Pino Mercanti and the only one produced by a Palermo native like himself, a former bank manager now retired. Bringing together family memories and historical research, it takes a journey through Italian cinema of the 1960s through archive material and original footage, film excerpts and interviews and old super8s in a back-and-forth movement. The film in question was entitled 'The Underground' (1970), but in Spain - the co-producing country - it was released under the title 'Matar es mi destino'. It was not a great success, and it was the last work of Pino Mercanti, director of 22 'official' films between the 1940s and the end of the 1960s (not counting the documentaries he directed) and of whom, today, no one - rightly or wrongly - remembers any more. Through testimonies and off-screen commentary, the story of the unfortunate film and of the men who were its protagonists is reconstructed, in a context of profound social transformation such as Italy was at the end of the 1960s.
