Abstract: Santa Croce è un'antica villa che sorge austera nella campagna modenese. Il silenzio delle sue albe è interrotto solo dalle lunghe preghiere delle suore che ci vivono. A settembre, quando le scuole riaprono, Santa Croce si trasforma in un luogo di apprendimento che accoglie circa 150 bambini dai 3 ai 10 anni. Venti di loro sono sordi. Sono arrivati senza suoni, senza parole formate. Per riuscire a rompere il silenzio e poter comunicare col mondo esterno, devono sottostare a lunghi e faticosi esercizi, ma soprattutto devono separarsi per lunghi periodi dai loro genitori. Le suore, premurose e pazienti, sanno che il superamento della nostalgia e la fiducia nella nuova famiglia è una condizione essenziale affinché i piccoli ospiti inizino a collaborare, sostituendo i suoni ai gesti. Un anno intero trascorso in un'antica scuola di campagna, guidati da "parole silenziose" e da "mani chiacchierone". Un anno intero per tornare bambini.
Santa Croce is an ancient villa that stands austere in the Modenese countryside. The silence of its dawns is interrupted only by the long prayers of the nuns who live there. In September, when the schools reopen, Santa Croce is transformed into a place of learning that welcomes about 150 children aged 3 to 10 years. Twenty of them are deaf. They arrived without sounds, without formed words. In order to break the silence and be able to communicate with the outside world, they have to undergo long and exhausting exercises, but above all they have to be separated from their parents for long periods. The caring and patient nuns know that overcoming homesickness and trusting their new family is a prerequisite for the young guests to start cooperating, replacing sounds with gestures. A whole year spent in an old country school, guided by "silent words" and "chattering hands". A whole year to become children again.
