The poets' work is not aimed at a mass audience; they mainly perform in small clubs. Each of them has found their own way to focus on the power of the spoken word. "Spitting Ink" composes a portrait of some of these artists. Interviews and live performances are interspersed with images of New York's side streets with their graffiti-covered walls, underground trains and bars. Spoken-word artist Mike Ladd talks about the origins and background of this form of poetry (which has its roots in gospel) and how it reached a turning point with the arrival of rap. Beau Sia creates poems both to impress girls and to refute misconceptions about his Asian roots; Celena Glenn writes only once a year, when her head is full to overflowing and dozens of poems suddenly spill out.
