Abstract: Due uomini, due storie, o meglio, due forme del ritratto cinematografico: da una parte, Abu Jandal, l’ex guardia del corpo di Osama Bin Laden, che ora fa il tassista; dall’altra Salim Hamdan, il primo prigioniero di Guantanamo ad essere processato per crimini legati ai fatti dell’undici settembre. Da una parte, un uomo che espone il suo pensiero, che lo rende pubblico, che racconta la sua storia a chiunque glielo chieda, un uomo che si offre allo sguardo della macchina da presa, alle curiosità e alle domande che suscita; un uomo che usa le parole come arma di seduzione e di comunicazione. Dall’altra un uomo quasi invisibile, i cui unici segni sono le lettere scritte ai suoi cari, le dichiarazioni degli avvocati, la sua storia raccontata dai media. Due storie che si intersecano sullo sfondo degli eventi che hanno scandito la contemporaneità, due storie che mostrano la complessità di un conflitto profondo a partire da chi ne è stato protagonista. "Il mio obiettivo era di comprendere questi eventi mondiali attraverso le storie delle persone che li hanno vissuti. Come nazione, io non penso che gli americani abbiano ancora fatto i conti con l’undici settembre e le sue ripercussioni (Guantanamo, l’invasione dell’Irak, la legalizzazione della tortura, ecc.)". Two men, two stories, or rather two forms of film portrait: on one hand, Abu Jandal, Osama Bin Laden’s former bodyguard now working as a cab driver and, on the other hand, Salim Hamdan, the first prisoner in Guantanamo to be put on trial for crimes related to 9/11. On one hand, a man that explains his ideas, makes them public, telling his story to whomever is interested – a man available to the camera’s gaze, the curiosity and the questions he arouses – a man who can use speech as a weapon of seduction and communication. On the other hand, an almost invisible man – his only signs are the letters he wrote his family, the lawyers’ statements, and his story as was reported by the media. Two stories crossing on the background of events that have marked the present, two stories that expose the complexity of a deep conflict departing from the very protagonists. “My goal was to understand these world events through the stories of those who have experienced them. As a nation, I don’t think Americans have begun to come to terms with 9/11 and its repercussions (Guantanamo, the invasion or Iraq, the legalization of torture, etc.).” (Laura Poitras)
